Joe Detroit and Dirty Shakes are a Dutch blues-jazz quartet of career musicians — each with 40 to 50 years of professional experience — who spent decades backing some of the best before stepping into the spotlight with something entirely their own.
Their sound is deeply rooted in electric blues and jazz, and Joe’s EWI makes it like nothing else on the Dutch circuit. Think ELP’s grandeur meeting Tom Waits’ grit and Keb Mo’s soul.
Joe Detroit’s road runs through Ramses Shaffy, the Midland Big Band, and the Alessi Brothers. Edwin van Huik (bass) has played with Vitesse, Gare du Nord, Kaz Lux, Julian Sas Band, and Lange Frans & Baas B, and runs Bass Connection in Blaricum — a long-standing destination for bass players. Guido van der Sluis (guitar) is also an electronics engineer and producer, modifying his own gear with the same ear that shapes his playing. Bill Honing (drums) is a Laren Jazz Podium finalist with credits backing Julia Loko and recording with American Gypsy.
Their performances are structured like shows — three sets, each woven from classic gems and original numbers, built to flow. Each set has a moment of connection. Joe speaks. The music answers.
